Chapter 12
The little dragon squawked under his blanket, already waking from the sedative. It was wrapped up so tight that it could hardly move. Which was a good thing. I was having enough trouble carrying this thing as it was. Fortunately, it had slept through the entire scooter ride here. Rented, not stolen. Well... borrowed. Iâll pay rental company back. The ride had been less than comfortable, especially on the cobblestones outside the dragon hospital. So I couldnât imagine how much more difficult it wouldâve been with a conscious dragon on hand. Now though, I had to walk, carrying something that was roughly the size and weight of a Labrador. Not easy. But I wasnât exactly going to charge into the Ametrine Palace grounds, scooter engine blaring in the wake of a huge heist. This wasnât a great plan but it was the only one I had. If I didnât pull this off successfully, then I might as well walk right up to Darius and pull the trigger on my own head.
A bolt of lightning lit up the sky behind the mountains, giving me a brief snapshot of a sinister looking cloud formation. Thunder crackled not far behind it, its echo bouncing off the mountains like the ultimate surround sound. The thunderstorm was coming in fast. Well that was going to put a damper on things. Literally. But it was tonight or never.
I felt the dragon squirm under its blanket, almost causing me to drop it.
âShhh,â I whispered at the little beast. âNot far now.â
Whether it was the same one Laurence and I had rescued the other night or not, I had no idea. I just grabbed the smallest, flight-enabled dragon I could find. Tonight we were going to wreak some havoc.
Following a map of the palace grounds in my head, I headed in the direction opposite to the ballroom and opted to break in through a kitchen window. I landed in a crouch on floor tiles that stank of bleach, my bundle squealing in my arms. It was well and truly awake now.
The kitchen was roughly twice the size of the hostel room I was staying in and it was more modern than Iâd expected for a palace kitchen. Stainless steel benches and oversized appliances loomed in the darkness, casting shadows across the checked floor tiles. I placed the dragon down in the shadow of a refrigerator, leaving it to free itself. It squawked and struggled until the blanket unravelled around it. The little dragon took a moment to assess its surroundings, its long neck twisting to take me into its sights. It seemed keener to get away from me than actually attack me. It flared its wings and hopped up onto one of the benches, its long claws scratching across the steel surface and making me squint. It stood on its hind legs, head bobbing like an owl or an eagle, as it took in its new viewpoint. For moment I thought it would try and go for a window but I soon realised it was more intelligent than that.
